普通氧化铁脱硫剂是以硫酸亚铁和石灰按比例混碾加工制成，此方法生产脱硫剂工艺简单、成本低，但也存在副产物硫酸钙与活性氧化铁无法有效分离，致使产品中活性氧化铁的含量较低；而羟基氧化铁在化学合成过程中，历经中和、氧化、洗涤、分离副产物等工序后，产品的晶型好、活性氧化铁含量高。一般情况下，在脱硫剂同等强度的条件下，高硫容氧化铁脱硫剂的穿透硫容是普通氧化铁脱硫剂的2-3倍。
